There might be a time when I have three rats (maybe) so I think all of these would hold them. If anyone has ever had any of these cages before I would love their input on them, though the reviews say they’re pretty good. Thanks so much!
Because cotton can fray, is it bad to make a hammock of out it for my rats? I would probably fold and sew the edges..
i just got a female rat from a local petstore (she and her litter mates were much healthier looking than petco and petsmart rats) i know they need a friend but my mom hardly allowed me to get one. i have had her for 3-4 days and she will let me hold her, she has groomed my finger, and she fell asleep next to me last night…but when i go to the cage she does not come to me, i have to reach in and gently grab her to get her out, the only food she will eat directly from me is yogurt on a spoon, but she wont take anything else from me. she also is very energetic outside the cage, sniffing everything and climbing around, but when i put here inside, she hardly moves, she will climb up to her hammock, or go inside her house, but other than that she hardly moves, and if she is walking somewhere, will sometimes randomly stand still for a bit….is she just new and nervous?? and if i can hold her without objection, why wont she come to me or take food???? sorry for rambling on but i am just a bit confused… 8-]
useful answers only please. and yes, i am sure rats find all humans weird lookin. 8-]
thanks, i have watched those videos, and did follow the first few steps…but what if she wont take food from you, and doesnt get at all excited when she sees food??? and she doesnt act scared when i hold her, she sniffs around and climbs my hands….
So, I’ve had these two rats for about two months. They’re mostly socialized, like we can play with them and whatnot without them pooping all over us. The problem is when they’re in their cage..they urinate usually only where the water bottle spout is located, and they also poo in the urine, making a lovely mess that I think they enjoy playing in while we sleep, because they usually smell like..well, pee. We’ve tried to litter train them using several methods, and nothing seems to be working, I swear to you, the other night I watched one of the rats lift the litter pan and DUMP it out, then throw the darn thing across the cage. Oh, and for the past couple of days, they have been taking craps in their hammock during the day when they have to poo while sleeping, I guess they’re too lazy to go down to the bottom of the cage and they don’t mind rolling in their own crap. This is ridiculous, I can’t bathe them every day, but I can’t stand the smell of them, either! I got rats ’cause I thought they’d be easy to potty train and from what I’ve read, they’re supposed to be fairly clean and not urinate where they drink and poop where they sleep. If it matters, they’re both boys, and they’re both about three months old, and we got them from a shoddy pet store where they were born.
This is more than territorial marking, I’ve seen them do that. This is full-blown bladder unloading.
1. I got a 30 gallon tank for the 2 rats its the only one my landlord would allow we have a screen cover and everytime we take them out (about 2 hrs or more a day) we put a fan over the cage to "air it out" its got levels and they seem to love it we use aspen bedding because carefresh is too dusty in my opinion. And their cage gets fully cleaned once a week but theyre also litter trained. Do you think theyre ok in there? we wanted to find one of those cage toppers but they dont make it in a 30 gallon size.

2. My bigger rat (Debo) is always stealing the food from my other rat (Marvin) i notice that a lot of times marvin is hungry so when i take him out i feed him… do you think ill have to do this forever? and i do put in enough food…. debo is just… greedy. if marvin happens to get food he will go and hump marvin …. take the food and run. so since we brought them home about a month ago i have to hand feed marvin.
3. Marvin tends to nibble a lot. And it concerns me because im scared one day he will bite hard. ill clean my hands…. so there are no traces of food but he still likes to nibble… his teeth are fine not long… is there anyway to break his habit?
4. Is there anyway to make a hammock in an aquarium? i have a little hut for them…but they love climbing and i figured they would LOVE a hammock since they are always standing on top of their water bottle anyway. most of the stuff in their cage i made and put together but couldnt quite figure out a hammock. any ideas?
4. Last what do you think of my boys? =]

thanks guys =]
the only thing is the landlord wont allow for anything other than a aquarium… were talking about building another layer on top of it though making one ourselves since they dont make cage toppers for 30 gallons.
my rats are always chewing up their hammocks and currently have none, and i dont really have the money or time to buy some at petsmart
Thanks
I love using the sewing machine and am pretty handy with it. I have some nice soft fleece and my new baby boys (2 rats) are arriving in 2 weeks! I really want to make them 1 or 2 hammocks or something to hang in the cage that is fun for them!!
Does anyone have any links or directions on how to make your own? Pictures would be amazing and I will be picking a best answer! Please help me!
I have a rat and I bought a tent that hangs from the cage and a hammock. Together they cost , and I’ve never even seen my rat use them! I did tons of research and all the sites say that rats NEED hammocks. Will she use them when she gets older? She is very smart and plays with her other toys, especially her digging box
They are all very tame and we have had them for two weeks now.
1.While in our bedroom we can hear the rats squeak loudly. We always think there is something wrong but when we go to look at their cage they all stand up staring at us like they normally do and nothing appears to be wrong. They isn’t any fighting noise either. They all sleep together at night. Could it be attention seeking? any ideas?
2.Why do my rats smell so bad. They have a hammock. We clean the cage every week and have now put some safe powder down which is supposed to make the urine smell less bad. However the smell is still there. It’s a sweet kind of smell. It still smells no matter how often we clean the cage. Any safe ways to get rid of the smell?. Outside of the cage, the rats themselves don’t seem to smell.
It’s 80 degrees in my room right now. The windows are open so there’s a slight breeze, but it’s not helping any. I’m so hot I feel like I could pass out, so I know these rats must be really hot as well. I put a dish of ice water in their cage to help them cool down, but I don’t know how much that’ll help since they seem to be completely avoiding it. I’m more worried about the 16 babies though since they’re all in a pile in a hammock… I don’t know how they could stand to sleep like that in this heat.
The only room that’s slightly cooler than mine is the bathroom, and their cage doesn’t fit in there. And Petco is 2 hours away…
I put them in my garage with a fan. They have some frozen cranberries and bananas… they seem happy x]
I made a teepee hammock by cutting 4 triangles and a square. i cut a hole in one of the triangles and then sewed the triangles to the square. Then sewed all the triangles together. But now i have one problem.. When my rats sit in it, the bottom falls! i need supports but i don’t know what to use or where to put it. I don’t want it to fall apart. What do i do?
Hi! I’m not terribly crafty, but I’d really like to learn how to make some things for my rats. I saw the rat hammock someone on Y/A made (I think it was Oh Boy). I would love to learn how to make that! Any ideas would be much appreciated.
i wanted to knit a ratty hammock for my lil rats. But all I have is acrylic yarn…is that safe for them to chew on and what not? or do i need to get cotton?
I feel like every time I put one up it is dismantled within a day or two. I have tried putting Eyelets into the corners but they still chew it. Any suggestions for the best thing to hang the hammock with? Should I use stronger fabric than fleece? I know not to use towels.
When my dogs chew their dog beds my mom puts a tiny bit of tobasco sauce around on the edges. I feel like that would be a bad idea with rats though. Ideas please!
