lawn mower repair; bent shaft.?

September 7th, 2011 3 comments

I have a toro recycler mdl. #20017 with a bent crank shaft. I have confirmed the shaft is indeed bent. I can not bring myself to just throw the mower away. It was bent by a relative who borrowed it. He states he hit the foot of a hammock stand and the mower cut off and he noticed oil had leaked from the bottom. He couldnt re-start it. I got it back and was able to re-start it like normal and noticed a heck of a vibration. I hoped the blade was bent, but it is definately the shaft thats bent. What can I do. A new comparable model is around 500 bucks. With this economy, thats out of the question, I have tools, wherewithall and some knowledge.

how should I hang a hammock on a wall with no studs?

August 5th, 2011 3 comments

I want to put a hammock in a corner of a room, the only problem is that one wall doesn’t have studs for some odd reason. I really would prefer not to get a hammock stand because they take up soo much space and look out of place.
I guess i could hang it from the ceiling, but the issue of space comes up again. Is there anyway that i can hang it from something else other than a wall?

Tree and stand hammocks…?

Can a normal tree hammock be hooked up to a hammock stand?

Will PVC hold the weight?

June 2nd, 2011 5 comments

I’m trying to make a hammock stand that’s light and portable…I came up with one idea and searched around a bit and found a couple made out of wood and what appears to be steel pipe
both sound heavy.

I was wondering if PVC would hold around 300-400lbs (2 people, a lot closer to 300lbs..but just in case)

here is a very intricate diagram I drew up so you could have an idea of what I’m trying to do
http://i54.tinypic.com/66hrns.png

or you could look at this, it’s almost exactly what I want to make, but with PVC
http://www.amazon.com/Byer-Maine-A4030-Madera-Hammock/dp/B00092M278/ref=sr_1_5?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1306297489&sr=1-5

I’m looking to either use a 45 degree elbow(if they make those) or maybe drill a hole through the tops to put a bolt through so it’s like a pivot

I just want to know if this design would hold the weight of 2 people or not, and if so..what sive PVC should I use and whatnot

I’m pretty sure wood or galvanized steel would work, but I don’t want to have to carry that much weight backpacking and such

Thanks for you help
Not talking about backpacking miles and miles…just enough to get away from people :P

I might look into aluminum…it would be about 12′ total that I’d be carrying though..might get a bit heavy.

also, I plan on using trees when available, but I also like looking at the stars at night, which isn’t possible with trees, so I might set up away from trees every now and then.
That’s a rope, pulling the top of the A frame thing outwards and staked into the ground, then the hammock pulls against it.

I’ve kinda shifted to four 1.5-2" wood dowels, probably oak or maple since I doubt ash will be at home depot and stake them out with at least a couple guy lines on each side

seems like it should be plenty strong to hold 2 people

will two 4" diameter cherry trees support a double sized hammock?

December 26th, 2010 3 comments

I really don’t want to buy a hammock stand, and I found two trees in my backyard in a beautiful location that are 15 feet apart. however, the trees are thin in diameter (about 4 inches in diameter) and I was wondering if they will still support my future hammock?

Also, how high up should i drill the holes in the tree to put in the screws? I want the hammock up pretty high off of the ground, but not so high that i have to jump up to get in the hammock.

Thank you so much!

Would you recommend sleeping in a camping hammock as a normal bed?

August 24th, 2010 6 comments

I’m about 5′5, 140 pounds if that helps. But I was just wondering if it would be comfortable enough, and not bad on your back. I was planning on getting a camping hammock, not the kind you see on the beach, and putting it on a hammock stand in my room. Thanks.

Should I let her use it?

March 25th, 2010 3 comments

LOL My 4 yr old neice is so cute! I got a hammock with a hammock stand and she said "I have to be really really nice to you so then you can let me use it!" and NOBODY told her to say that!

Should I take her at her word and let her use it only when she’s nice to me? She’s brilliant!
of course I’d watch her and it’s not a net kind.

How do I build a sturdy hammock stand, thats all curved?

January 13th, 2010 1 comment

I caught a fleeting glance of a curved hammock stand, it seemed to be made of only about 5-7 pieces of curved and strait pieces of lumber. I have searched the bowls of the internet and can’t find any way to curve sturdy lumber, please help.

thank you
ha, well of course im up for a huge learning expreince. But before I jump in, I guess i really just want to know, how expensive it will be to actually bend wood (as in equipment).

How to hang a hammock in a small room, without drilling?

December 10th, 2009 3 comments

Hey all,

Looking at hanging a hammock in a small apartment room at my college. Unfortunately it has nothing to hang hooks on. I have a walk-in closet where I can attach one end of a hammock, but nothing on the other side of the room except for a window (the blinds rack is not stable enough to hang a hammock off of).

Bit of a crappy problem. I can’t drill holes in the wall. I was hoping to go without a hammock stand, because those normally cost 0+. Any tips?

can you hang a mayan or mexican hammock from a traditional stand?

October 18th, 2009 2 comments

I have a mayan/mexican hammock (without a spreader bar). Can I hang this from a classic stand like this, for example?http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00637088000P?keyword=hammock+stand
or this

Steel Hammock Stand – Protection from rust?

August 30th, 2009 1 comment

Just got a new steel hammock stand which I know will hold up pretty good, but I live in Hawaii. Is there something more I can do to protect it from rusting?

What type of hammock would you recommend?

August 23rd, 2009 2 comments

I’m looking for a two person hammock, probably able to hold 500 pounds. It will be used outdoors. I’m looking for something with minimal maintenance yet comfortable. I plan to tie it to two trees versus a hammock stand.
