How do I make a hammock?

May 19th, 2011 6 comments

I have a blanket that I would like to make into a hammock. But I need to know how to. I need help. I need a camping hammock, you know, the ones you tie around a tree. I don’t even know the stuff I need. I researched but could not find what I was looking for.

Anyone used a Clark's Jungle Hammock before?

April 15th, 2011 3 comments

I love camping and am wondering about trying it with a hammock for a change. Just wondering if anyone has any feedback on these. I do like to sleep on my stomach or side but I like the idea of a hammock. If I get one, I am not really interested in a cheap one. Any input?

Good portable hammocks?

November 19th, 2010 1 comment

I’m going to be going camping with a bunch of friends soon and I need a good portable hammock, ’cause tent challenged. The hike to our camp site will be from 2-4 hours long, and its going to be up hill. The hammock needs to be lightweight and pretty cheap (like under 0) Thank you!

Would you recommend sleeping in a camping hammock as a normal bed?

August 24th, 2010 6 comments

I’m about 5′5, 140 pounds if that helps. But I was just wondering if it would be comfortable enough, and not bad on your back. I was planning on getting a camping hammock, not the kind you see on the beach, and putting it on a hammock stand in my room. Thanks.

What can I build a portable geodome (geodesic dome) shelter with that will support a hammock?

June 23rd, 2010 1 comment

I would like to make a portable geodome shelter for camping, music festivals, and general fun. The internet has told me that it is possible to make a pretty sturdy geodome with just about anything from newspaper to human hair to crystal and back again.

I would like to make a shelter hearty enough to support at least one hammock and, in a perfect world, tall enough to stand up in. This model is appealing: http://www.eham.net/articles/11300 or possibly even a little bigger.

What should I build this masterpiece with so that it won’t implode with the addition of a hammock(s)? The website I quoted above suggests conduit; many of the prefab ones are made of PVC or something, which seems to me like it would be scary to hammock from. I don’t have a lot of experience with conduit (I had to google what it was), but it seems like it can be made from a variety of metals.

My thinking at this point is steel conduit. Is there anyone out there who is good at math, or who is knowledgeable about the capabilities conduit, who could back up this choice in a more educated sense than "steel is pretty strong… right?"

OR, better yet, anyone with actual experience hammocking from their portable geodome?

Also, if you have the time or patience to keep this in mind, I am hilariously poor, so while diamond rods would probably be ideal, that suggestion would be completely unhelpful.

Thank you, fellow internet people!

Which camping hammock brand do you recommend for motorcycle travel?

February 14th, 2010 4 comments

I want to buy my boyfriend a camping hammock for his birthday. A little backround: he wants something that’s really compact because he wants to go on a roadtrip on his motorcycle. He was looking at the Clark Jungle Hammocks, which do seem the best. That is a little pricey for me though, so I was wondering about Hennesey hammocks. He wants something warm, easy, and light. Which brands should I look at?

How can I keep heavy people off my hammock?

November 22nd, 2009 13 comments

I’m going camping with my family and another family this weekend, and I have a new tree hammock that only holds 200 pounds.

The other family members are all quite heavy – well over 200 pounds each. What is the proper way to make sure they know my hammock will not hold them?

What is a good Lightweight camping hammock?

October 24th, 2009 5 comments

I am looking for a lightweight camping hammock that includes rain protection built into the tent. I do not want to spend 100s either. I saw one for 300 dollars and that is too much. Also, I am looking for a lightweight backpack. Optimally both would be compact and lightweight. I do not know much about brands, functions, and types. Please help.
