Why is it okay to wear next to nothing at the pool or beach, but you can’t go out anywhere else like that?

It seems a little silly to me. It’s somehow okay to wear a bikini or banana hammock in one setting, but anywhere else it would be vulgar or trashy or whatever. It’s just a strange dichotomy.
let me further clarify…. decency standards in my opinion are enforced except when it comes to swimwear. People freak about being seen in their underwear, but the swimsuit could be even more revealing, yet somehow it’s okay?

Standard clothing isn’t appropriate for water – has a tendency to stick and drag and leave a big mess everywhere. :-)

However more clothing is appropriate pretty much everywhere else.

I agree it is kind of funny though. I never walk around the house in a bra and thong because it’s just "wrong," but have no problem wearing my postage stamp g-string in the same setting despite its having far less material and less skin coverage. But even then, I only do the latter if I’m going out in the back yard.

Hey, I bet you can get away with it at Hugh Hefner’s place any time, with or without a pool or a back yard! :-D

Because as part of civilized society, we have customs and traditions on what is acceptable where — and this includes clothes…

    Time and place for everything..

yes, just like you would be beyond efmbarrased when your borhter or somebody sees you in underwear, yet you can wear something very slutty at the beach. its very confusing.

as you are in swimming pool so it is o.k.if in the swimming pool you go with clothes on it will not serve the purpose. for different situations one is to dress up differently.you are going in social gathering you need not go in swimming costume.you need to go with different dress.

Matt hit the nail on the head. if you were the only one wearing clothing at a nudist resort, you would look and feel out of place. So the setting dictates the attire.
