When using a hammock while backpacking, where do you put your pack?
I was planning on buying a hennesey hammock for the appalachian trail when it hit me.
What will i do with my pack?
Shouldn’t i be afraid of rodents getting into it, someone stealing from it, or a bear taking it?
I have a tent.
hang it to your hammock that way it’s in reach if you need it and hang the hammock 12 feet above ground…
That is why you bring a length of line to run over a tall limb and use the bag for the bear bag.
If your going with a buddy just lean the two packs against each other away from where your sleeping. In bear country you don’t want to have your pack, or anything in your tent/sleeping area in case a bear decides to check out the smell – better to lose the pack than your life.
take a rope and tie to the pack and toss over a limb and pull it up about 9-10 feet in the air.
First of all, make sure that the weather is appropriate for a hammock. Weather can be REALLY cold(duh). Second of all, take all "smellables" (food, deoderant, toothbrush, toothpaste, and bottles that have EVER had anything other than water in it) and put them in a bear bag so neither bears nor micro-bears,racoons, can get to them. THEN you can worry about the pack. I don’t think rodents will be a problem. A bear won’t get to it if there isn’t any smellables in it. As for someone stealing it, either put it in the bear bag (Not recommended, look at #1) or you can put it under the hammock, I doubt anyone will steal stinky clothing, and other stuff of no real value, best thing to do though, buy a tent. I know what you wrote but, that’s the way to go and you won’t have to worry about thiefs.
