What is the horizontal distance of the endpoints of a catenary given endpoint & midpoint height & cable length?
The cable length is approximately 170 inches or 432 cm.
The endpoint (both ends) is approx 72" or 183 cm.
The midpoint is about 20" or 51 cm.
What does the horizontal distance between the endpoints need to be?
Why? I am making a stand for a transverse hammock (the transverse hammock is the "cable".) I have tried to figure it out, but the answers I calculated make no sense.
For a catenary of length 432cm, with a height change of 132cm from centres to ends :
The supports would need to be 315 cm apart.
Hope this helps, (I can show you how I worked it out if you need it)
When you are in the hammock, the curve won’t be a catenary of course, beacuse it is not a uniform cable, with a uniform mass distribution
