Membership is very expensive, they're sorta like country clubs. However, there is public beach club that has a nice pool and is clean and not very expensive, the Annenberg Community Beach House in Santa Monica. http://beachhouse.smgov.net/ Most of the beaches in CA are public, with few exceptions.
