How do I make a part of the background picture in Photoshop transparent?

In Photoshop class, we’re trying to take a picture of a landscape and crop ourselves into it. I have a beach scene with a hammock spread between to palm trees. I’m trying to put myself in the hammock, but I can’t make it look like I’m inside of the hammock. Can I possibly make the hammock somewhat transparent? Or is there an easier way?

Take the photo of yourself, select the layer (the "background layer", it should be the only one), then double click to unlock it. Then you can erase everything else apart from yourself.

I suggest using a layer mask instead of erasing as if you get it wrong you can always go back without having to ctrl + z. To do this click the "add Layer Mask" button at the bottom of the layers pallet. Using the paint brush, brush in black to hide and white to reveal.

Then copy yourself’s layer into the beach scene and scale and position as needed!

    Hope this helps!
